How To Clean Vinyl Records
Vinyl records may be a thing of the past, but still, there are people who collect them, even continue to play with them, simply because they are a heirloom of the past. Also, there are still some people who use vinyl records to this day, such as disk jockeys, who prefer the ease of "scratch music" methods through the vinyl record than anywhere else. That is because they can basically get better control over the music with a vinyl record player than with anything else.
So, what is the secret for good quality sound using a vinyl record? First things first, you have to make sure that it is clean. When you keep your vinyl records clean from specks of dust, dirt, or fingerprints, you also keep the music coming out of it sounding clear and lasting longer, with minimal crackle, clicks, and pops.
So, how do you keep a vinyl record clean? There are two ways: by hand or via a vinyl record cleaning machine.
Cleaning Vinyl Records by Hand
To clean vinyl records by hand, you have to purchase a record cleaning solution available in the market, particularly in record stores. These cleaning solutions usually come with an applicator brush. If they don't, then you will have to buy a separate record cleaning brush to go with the cleaning solution.
If you find a record cleaning solution too costly, you could simply opt for alcohol, dishwahing liquids with no moisturizer content, or distilled water. If it is alcohol, make sure that it is Isopropyl 90% or higher. Make sure to rinse well and dry completely after applying.
Once you have all your equipment handy (cleaning solution, brush, and the vinyl record to be cleaned), you can now start the process, as follows:
1. Put the vinyl record on a flat surface, such as a table or the turntable platter itself.
2. Put some cleaning solution in the applicator brush as per the intructions in the package or bottle of the cleaning solution.
3. Brush the top of the vinyl record, first in a counter-clockwise direction, to loosen dirt. Once this is done, check the brush and remove all accumulated dirt. Then, brush the vinyl record once more, this time in the other direction. Let it dry first before flipping the vinyl record to the other side for cleaning.
4. Repeat the aforementioned instructions for the other side of the vinyl record.
Cleaning Vinyl Records By Machine
On the other hand, to clean vinyl records by machine, all you have to do is to purchase a vinyl record cleaning machine. Such machines already have built in applicator brushes on them, and you will just have to buy the cleaning solution. All you basically have to do is to put the record on the cleaning machine and turn it on, and it does all the work for you. However, vinyl record cleaning machines can be costly, so many people simply opt to clean their vinyl records by hand.

Vinyl love: LP fans wax enthusiastic about wax The first music I heard on a CD was the Beatles' Revolver . It was at my friend Tim's apartment on State Street in the early 1980s.
